Holiday Thoughts

Jim McManus, December 24, 2016

We’ve been thinking about the holiday season and the new year and two particular aspects have struck us here at Complex Stories.

One is the importance of stories to the holiday season. Whether it is the personal stories of how we share and spend holidays past — often stories from our childhoods — or the common stories we all share like the animated “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” (Bumbles bounce!) or Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”.  These stories connect us in nice ways and help evoke and encourage the holiday spirit.

Capra, by the way, is a deceptively good visual storyteller. He keeps it simple and straightforward. But in rewatching It’s a Wonderful Life for the umpteenth time. it’s easy to appreciate how he breaks the story into discreet chunks, uses voiceovers and flashbacks to tie it together and tells it all with a sharp visual sensibility.

We’ve also been thinking about how this holiday season marks the 4th anniversary of CS. Our business has expanded significantly over those four years. We started with only and handful of clients combined from our individual professional lives and been fortunate to connect to a wide variety of terrific clients through word of our reputation.

In appreciation of our clients and collaborators we have sent out holiday greetings in past years. Our first was this playful infographic image:

This year, we sent out a more ambitious gift to a much larger list, thanking them for all all they do for us. We designed and produced  or CS Coffee Cups — turning what is normally a mundane, but enjoyable, daily routine of coffee drinking into a little info story.

Now, we’re looking forward to 2017 and all the fun, challenging, impactful projects we will get to do with our collection of amazing clients.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the new year.
